Mother's Day: A Day Late

David Heustis and I just returned from a trek across the country recording behind-the-scenes interviews for The Widow's Might. After a week and a half on the road, eating mostly fastfood, I began to develop a longing for homecooked meals; my favorite being Mom's spaghetti with her very rich homemade meat sauce.

Reflecting, there is so much I could write about my mother. Those who know her story, know that she was the first woman to take highschool automechanics in the state of Alaska, that she was the first woman to be a laboror on the Trans-Alaska pipeline, and that she fought hard for those rights. Being a fighter and a champion has always been in my mother's blood, and being married to a lion-hearted man like my father, it was important for her to be a lioness.

But since their salvation over 24 years ago, God has done a miraculous work in my mother's heart, transforming her from a strong-willed feminist, into a model of honorable and courageous motherhood. The same strength and passion has been transformed into the unbreakable Instructing six boys to support the vision of our father with strength and masculinity, and yet raising a beautiful and virtuous daughter to model biblical femininity, she has shown herself a saint worthy of a thousand praises. Now when I tell others who know my mother about her background, they have difficulty believing me.

Today I read the praises of another Godly woman, and I saw my own mother in these words of praise as well.

"I see her humility in her willingness to be overshadowed by Dad. She prefers to bask in his shadow than to chase after the fame and adulation that could so easily and rightly be hers. I’ve never known a woman who cared about personal glory less, or who deserved it more. She will be remembered with more respect than her contemporaries, who fought with religious zeal for recognition and prestige, and now have no one to rise up and call them “blessed.”"

A beautiful post I highly recommend reading. Read the full post at VisionaryDaughters.com.
